Julian Twigg was born in Victoria in 1964, completed a Bachelor of Economics at the National University of Australia in Canberra in 1990 and commenced a Diploma of Visual Art at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2000. He has had solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Sydney. His latest work forcuses on the numerous cargo vessels making their way along shipping lanes to the busy ports of Melbourne, Geelong and ports in New South Wales.
'The evolution of Twigg's painting practise has been in some ways prompted by his recent forays into printmaking. Learning to resolve his images in print has had a profound effect on the way he now resolves his paintings. The compositions have become less linear and formal and the palette more harmonious allowing the nuggety ships to integrate with the sea and sky, their forms reflecting the mood of the natural environs' - Caroline Field in interview with artist, Lone Voyage catalogue, November 2006
Julian Twigg won the ANL Maritime Art Prize in 2007 and was a finalist in the Fleurieu Peninsula Water Prize in 2006 and the Whyalla Art Prize in 2007.
